Bzzzzz...
Car shopping is proceeding apace. South Bay Hyundai dealers believe in the hard sell. Boy, do they believe in the hard sell. And they kinda irked me with the amount they offered for my trade in. (And for a car I wasn't 100% sold on-- who'd want a black interior in California?) I had to leave and go to work, but now they're calling and want me to come back in so they can have someone else "appraise" my trade. Sorry, you snooze, you lose, busters.

There's a Honda Civic I like the looks of, but I'm not sure it's in my price range. I may have to sell my old car myself on Craigslist in order to get more money, which isn't something I really want to do. Also Mazdas still haven't been test driven.

Hey, anyone got any ideas for quiche filling besides the usual? I've tried spinach, broccoli, asparagus, bacon. But I'm hankering for something different. I was thinking maybe cubed ham and salsa, but I'm not sure how that would turn out. Might be too soggy. Any other suggestions?

Also the last two season of EastEnders have had episodes that made me cry at work. What the heck? It's a frigging soap! I must be getting soft in my old age. And speaking of work, we have an invasion of wasps. I don't know what's worse-- a wasp sitting in the light fixture above your head or behind your back. They both give me the heebie jeebies.

How is the weekend over already?
Ugh, Supernatural is pissing me off again this season. Perfectly good episodes ruined by one or two scenes. Feels like S4 all over again. >:| Fuck you, show!

On the other hand, ♥ Revenge. I really liked this interview with the lead actress : The moment she forgives is the moment that she has to let him go. It also gives a good overview of the show. I do have a kind of spoilery question though. )

And if you don't believe me about how good it is, here's another testimonial I found while surfing around the web. (though if you don't want any spoilers, stop reading after the first Nolan paragraph.) I actually like saving up two or three eps and marathoning them. I find it more satisfying seeing the results and they tie all the different threads together so well episode after episode. >.> If anyone's interested, I may be able to hook people up.

I also watched the first few episodes of Homeland, until it started squicking me out too badly. I really didn't like their treatment of women-- they're all either sexual objects or mentally ill. Ugh. And it reminds me of Lost where you're constantly strung along and never given answers. Other shows I am still behind on but want to catch up: Lost Girl and Once Upon a Time.

Urgh, I seem to have broken my desktop computer today. Turned it on, used it for an hour or so, walked away from it for about 30 minutes and came back to a blue screen of death that I couldn't make go away even in safe mode. I think I backed it up about six months ago and I've mostly been using my laptop for the past couple of months, so I don't think I lost too much data-- maybe some bigbang pdfs and other fic and some pictures. And relatedly, why do I sometimes get weird stack and memory error messages on twitter? It won't load completely and yet every other website works fine.

Anyone know if it's possible to buy something from itunes without installing itunes? I hear the Ben Edlund Nerdist panel is pretty good. Or does anyone know if there's another way to buy it? I suppose I should just google it myself.

I think I'm going to get a pinboard.in account to back up my delicious. Then give it a few weeks and decide between the two services. I think Avos is trying to make improvements, but we'll see how good they do. If I'm unhappy (since I have a feeling that they just bought it for the built-in user base and content), I'll just delete my delicious.

What was the name of the dentist in Little Shop of Horrors again?
I'm stealing this from one of my ebook communities:

Diane Duane is once again thinking of completing her "Door" series. […] It's a charming swords-and-sorcery series with very likable characters in a "everyone is bisexual" world. There are important gay, straight, lesbian, and poly romances. Also dragons, a snarky shapeshifting fire elemental, angst, a fascinating magic system, and a non-sappy Goddess. Warning for non-gratuitous and plot-important but fairly graphic rape flashback scene in book two.

If this sounds like something you might possibly like, check out her e-book site, where they are all available. If you decide to do this, use the discount code STARLIGHTGUILT when you check out: it’ll give you a 15% discount on your total purchase and also mark you as someone to be notified should something start happening with Starlight in 2012.

I can't tell you how often I prowled all the local used bookstores within a 20-mile radius until I finally found a copy of Door Into Sunset. Relatedly, I also found out Brandon Fox is starting to publish ebooks. I think one of his books was the first bit of m/m porn I ever read. Before I discovered Nifty. Before I found fandom.

Wish me luck and that this will be my last visit for the dentist. *crosses fingers*

A list of good things:
It's a good thing I took Friday off, because my check engine light came on when I was driving home last night.
It's a good thing my check engine light came on last night and not two weeks ago before I passed my smog check.

At work they used to bring in treats for us every day. Nothing real special and it was usually down to crumbs by the time I came in, but Mondays were fruit days, Tuesday were bulk danishes from the grocery store, Wednesdays were bagels, etc. One thing they used to get was this raspberry-walnut rugala that I LOVED. Then about a year ago, they started cutting corners, cutting the budget and my lovely Tuesday rugala was no more. Until I discovered that they had been buying it from Smart & Final! \o/ I have raspberry-walnut rugala!

Oh dear. I see some A Dance with Dragons sample chapters have leaked. So very tempting. (ETA: Or they leaked awhile ago and I am very behind the times. ;)

Relatedly, I think I've finally stumbled across a Game of Thrones ep that I don't particularly like.

Supernatural spoilers combined with unpopular fandom opinion: So the last three episodes are going to be all about Castiel, Lisa and Ben? And how much they can make Dean cry? Okay then, very glad I'm not watching this crap. Next step in my recovery is giving up the spoilers and reaction posts.

Happy belated Sam Winchester Day. You're still my favorite, in all your angsty fucked-up glory (said entirely unironically.)

Oh, lookie! Long Beach public library has started carrying ebooks. Quite an interesting selection too. And they don't seem to be through Overdrive. And they don't seem to have any HarperCollins titles. >;D I don't see any m/m either although they do have some of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I may have to figure out a way to change that.

At work today I was working on a series that I actually haven't had anything to do with in about four, five months. And I totally had a flashback to taking care of Chase. Like, in the middle of the project, the thought crossed my mind-- "How long do I have to stay tonight to finish this because I have to be home by 1:00 to feed-- oh, wait, no I don't." It was a very weird sense of deja vu.

Hrm, I supposed I should try to sleep. I hate this weather and my allergies are totally acting up.

Read!
So fic recs. \o/

These ended up being rather J2 heavy, but I think that's mostly what I've been reading lately? (Anyone want to rec me some good Dean/Sam, while we're here?)

A Certain Smile by [personal profile] elise_509
Jared/Jensen, NC-17, word count: 57K
It's 1958. Jared is the high school superstar: all-around athlete, straight-A student, and one half of the most popular couple in town. Jensen is the teen rebel, all motorcycles, hot rods, and rock ‘n’ roll. When Jared’s life veers closer to the edge, he finds Jensen waiting for him there. The collision is inevitable.

This one is a [profile] spn_j2_bigbang story from a couple years ago that I just got around to reading. It has one of the hottest kisses I think I've ever read and it's not even between J2. I really loved the clash of cultures and how Jared and Jensen really kind of have to work at their relationship-- they're complex and they make mistakes, but keep getting drawn back together. It's a story of first times and senior years, socs and greasers, coming to terms and coming out. It's a romance in all the best connotations of the word. If you just read one of the recs, make it this one.

At First Sight by [personal profile] cleflink
Jared/Jensen, PG, Word count: 7945
Once upon a time, a stable boy loved a prince who'd never seen him. Who also happened to be his best friend.

I gotta admit I almost skipped this one. I saw the graphic, made a snap judgment and scrolled by it on my flist. Then someone rec'd it, I didn't put two and two together so I clicked through, and I'm really glad I did. I'm such a sucker for fairly-tales. I don't know what it is, and this one is a really nice twist on it-- Jensen is blessed with the "gift" of love at first sight as a baby. So what does he do? Decides to wear a blindfold his entire life. This one had me smiling the whole way through. Although it does get a little melancholy towards the end, it's got a nice schmoopy ending.

If Only A Heart Could Be As White As Snow, by [personal profile] zuben_eschamali
J2 AU, PG13, Word Count: 14,066
What if Snow White had been a young man? It would not only have been his beauty that was a threat, but his future role as king. What if his best friend was a huntsman's son, and both of their worlds were shattered by the betrayal of a jealous stepfather…

Remember I mentioned above that I'm a sucker for fairy-tales? This is an awesome spin on Snow White. I actually got kinda teary there in the middle of it, the perfect bit of fic for winter-into-spring.

Folie a Deux by [personal profile] zoemathemata
Dean/Sam, Jensen/Jared, R, Word Count: 12,000ish
At Lofty Pines Mental Institution, Jensen and Jared try to work through their delusions of being Dean and Sam Winchester.
-Or-
At Lofty Pines Mental Institution, Dean and Sam Winchester are being manipulated into thinking they’re Jensen and Jared

Sometimes you feel jaded, then a story comes along and you realize that even a trope that you see a lot of can be done with a new twist. This story is a mind fuck in every sense of the word. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns. The author did a great job with the mystery and keeping you on the edge of your seat to figure out which way it was going-- and then when you think you've figured it out, she'll pull you the other way. A really brilliant idea.

Battlefield Victory by [profile] eclecticxdetour
Jensen/Jared, Rating: 18+, Word Count: 4000
Jensen's tribe returns from the battlefield victorious, with them a couple of youngsters from the enemy tribe captured and spoils of war. When it's evening they're all thrown together and the warriors can get their pick from the group.

Okay, this one is really kind of PWPish and written for a comment-fic prompt, but it also hit a bunch of my kinks-- bottom!Jared, claiming, first time, and so on. Don't let the warnings scare you. It really was quite a bit softer than I expected. And if you're looking for historical accuracy in your warrior-spoil of war fic, this isn't the one for you.

Through the Fallout by [dreamwidth.org profile] theskywasblue
Sam/Dean, NC17, 950words
It seems to me that Dean's always the one getting whammied, so I whammied Sam instead. Fuck or die.

Another PWP comment-prompt fic, this time Sam and Dean. Desperate and hot, short and sharp and anything but sweet. There's a strong season-one vibe to this one that I really liked.

People-Who-Can't-Stand-Each-Other With Benefits by [personal profile] mistyzeo
J2 AU, NC-17, 4950 words
Jared's the only sophomore on the Varsity soccer team, so he thinks he's a little better than dirt, but Jensen Ackles might not agree. But that's okay, because Jensen Ackles is a first-class douchebag.

Third in the PWP trifecta-- and hot like burning. Filthy hot like burning. Um, hate sex totally counts, right? This was recced all over creation when it was first posted.

Dial It In by [personal profile] kelleigh
Jared/Jensen. NC17. 10,500 words. AU of Top Shot.
Tonight, on TOP SHOT, revenge is the name of the game. Old challenges come back to haunt our final five marksmen as they compete in a new kind of obstacle course. With everyone's sights set on the 100,000 dollar prize, friendships and alliances in the house will be tested, and a pair of rivals will meet in our elimination challenge to see which one will continue on their quest to be our TOP SHOT.

Okay, I've never heard of Top Shot, but it's apparently a cross between the reality-competition-show-of-your-choice and Sniper. I wasn't familiar with the show, but I'm a sucker for the J2-on-reality-show trope. This one had a small twist I didn't see coming and I really liked back and forth structure of this story and how it kind of jumped between the first meetings-newbie insecurity to familiarity and the competitive nature of the show. And that's not even getting into the banter and the emotions that build through the story. And is there anything more phallic than big hard guns?

Randomness...
Elisa is looking for judges for the Rainbow awards, if GLBT ebooks are your thing. I've done it for the past two years and it's a great way to read some books you might not normally pick up. The first year I found one of my favorite authors ever (although there's no guarantee the books you'll be assigned will be all awesomeness, fair warning!)

Speaking of books, I am currently reading Nightlife by Rob Thurman, and enjoying it quite a bit. The only criticism I have of it is that all the characters rely too heavily on quips and one-liners. I'm hoping that that's just a newbie writer's flaw and things will even out in the rest of the series, but I don't know. It's not bad enough to spoil my enjoyment. It does have a slightly unpolished fanfic vibe, but I don't know if that's just me or not.

Also did you know it's Read an eBook Week? Free books here and here and here. (I make no recommendations as to the quality, however.)(I seem to be full of qualifications today. *^_^*)

Onion bagel with cream cheese, y/n?

Wow, daylight savings time changes next weekend. That came up fast.

I seem to have picked up a major bummer of a virus on my laptop. Haven't tried getting it off yet, but I'm almost afraid it might be toast. It has lasted for 10 years, so I'm not all that upset, but I won't be replacing it for a while if it is.

Procrastination hits again. Tail end of my con report from last month. Sunday )

Argh, I meant to get some stuff up on ebay, but it's getting a little late tonight. Guess it will have to wait till next weekend.

Other random ramblings-- I have new tires on my car and they actually seem to be aligned right! \o/ I want a smart phone but have no justification to get one. Coffee-mate is discontinuing all my favorite flavors. This makes me sad.

Need to buy a carbon monoxide detector for my condo. They seem to be required by law now. I wonder if there's anything I need to know about them.

Dear flist, I would like to know! Is the SPN anime I've seen floating around dubbed, subbed or raw?

Dear HarperCollins, you're actually trying to out-evil Amazon? Really?

Library Journal:
In the first significant revision to lending terms for ebook circulation, HarperCollins has announced that new titles licensed from library ebook vendors will be able to circulate only 26 times before the license expires.

[source and more links] (Oh, and they want library patron data on top of that.Yeah, FUHC.)

Oh, and once you've read up on it (SBTB has a nice write up) feel free to email HarperCollins and tell them how you feel: library.ebook@harpercollins.com. Weird-- I never thought I'd have to look at who published a book before deciding whether to buy it or not.

One of the things I like about captioning Disney Family shows is that they actually have some positive female role models and dialogue. For example, Melissa and Joey-- she is a city councilwoman and he is a nanny. In a show I worked on for the past two days there was a throw-away line about a doctor and "She said I just need to rest." Things like that shouldn't even be remarkable enough to notice, but they are. Good job, Disney. Even though you need a prince-in-distress being rescued by the damsel every once in a while.

Also yesterday I got to work on a French thriller about the cold war. Yaye foreign films! \o/ It was pretty good although a little hard to follow. (Also we're supposed to be getting the first episode of Game of Thrones next week. Everyone cross your fingers.) Okay, just got sucked into watching Queen perform at Live Aid. (Queen is relevant to the French movie, trust.) Best live performance ever? In case you can't tell I like foreign films.

Sticking my head out from my burrow...
Thanks guys. You know who you are. ♥

Whoops. Somehow I managed totally overbook next week with three (I guess the vet appt is canceled.) two somewhat stressful events all in a row. How did I do that to myself?

Dad was in the hospital last week for a bit of emergency surgery. He's okay now, but I really hate finding out things like that after the fact. :( He did have a bit of a complication, but it's the same one he had the last two times he had surgery so they know how to handle it. Good wishes are still appreciated.

I did a little bit of an flist clean up. No biggie, just journals that hadn't seem to have been used in a while. If I caught you by mistake, let me know. And speaking of LJ, they somehow screwed up and I'm missing some posts on my flist. If I missed commenting on something you wanted me to see, let me know. I bet it's because I let my paid time lapse. Bastiges.

So I have a question for you, dear flist. Do you think I'd like The Social Network? Not, is it any good or not, but do you think I'd like it? Because I like good movies and its Oscar noms make it more attractive, but on the other hand I hate Facebook with a fiery burning passion and I'm not sure I could sit through a movie about it. I'm thinking The King's Speech is more my speed.

Have a meme. )

Apparently Paley has a website where you can submit questions for the SPN panel. Go here. Keep in mind this is not a feedback form, nor a place to vent your spleen. ;)

My theory on why SPN was even chosen to have a panel this year is because of the TV Guide cover. I think the Paley event is going to focus on fandom and meta and the overlap between fans and creators. I could be entirely wrong, but it seems kinda odd that they'd select a show in its sixth year and nearing the end of its run otherwise.

I think I'll indulge in some fanfic and retail therapy today. I have a nice Amazon GC left from Christmas, though I'm not sure what to get with it.

[profile] datenshiblue, you made my day, dear. *smishes*

Wow, I've been futzing around with Calibre (ebook management software) on and off for the past couple months and while I really like it a lot, there's some things that I really wish it would do that it doesn't. For example, it only looks at Google books when looking up covers and summaries, but it seems like Goodreads has a lot more of the books I've got, so I do a lot of cutting and pasting. And I get really annoyed that I can't just browse to a URL and download a cover if there isn't one. Also I have no idea what it's doing with my html files. Looks like when I import them, it just zips them up, but can I just convert these to another format to put them on my ereader now? Plus it's really REALLY slow and eats up all my system resources. I guess I really shouldn't be complaining, because it's freeware, but I feel like you have to be a programmer to get full use out of it. There's supposed to be all sorts of nifty Python plug-ins, but I don't have a clue what to do with those. Having said all that, I did spend several hours this weekend sorting and labeling and cataloging. And I've currently got a batch of books importing (that will then need cataloging and sorting *^_^* ) Now if I could just find time to read.

I have been reading the first Percy Jackson book while waiting at the vet the past couple of weeks and is it just me, or does it really resemble Harry Potter in terms of plot and characters? Young boy with special powers he doesn't know he had sent off to special school/camp to learn to use said powers with evil creatures hunting him.

I bought too much chicken at the grocery store Friday. What can I say, it was on sale. My mom sent me this recipe for teriyaki sauce, but it's all sugar and salt. Anyone got a good easy teriyaki recipe? Or failing that, any good chicken recipes? There's too much chicken even for my go-to fiesta chicken recipe, unless I want to eat solely that for the next month.

Work needs people to work overtime-- mandatory overtime was even mentioned. I offered to work on some stuff this weekend from home and we were getting it all set up so I could ftp the video, when the head honcho said-- "Oh, by the way, you won't get paid overtime. You'll just get paid the freelance reformat rate." O.O Yeah, the only reason I offered to do this was for the money, so if you're gonna nickel and dime me and not gonna pay me OT after I've worked 40+hours this week already, then I guess it must not be that important that this gets done, huh? Don't come bitching to me when we miss the deadline for these.

Gotta remember to pay some bills today. Bills! BILLS!

So after all that, instead of reading I'm gonna go watch True Grit. *waves* I hope you're all doing something fun and relaxing this lovely Sunday night.
